ZESCO UNITED REDUCE GAP AT THE TOP

ZESCO United yesterday recorded an important 2-1 victory against Buildcon in the MTN Super League week 30 fixtures played at the Levy Mwanawasa stadium, Ndola.

With four games to go before the close of the season, the league defending champions swept Buildcon aside to boost their chances of closing the gap on league leaders, Red Arrows.

The hosts started the game on a shaky note with Buildcon taking an early lead through a 12’ minute Gift Lukwesa cracking goal which left ZESCO United goalkeeper Ian Otieno rooted.

ZESCO United responded in the 30’ minute with a close-range header from John Chingandu that ended up at the back of the net.

11’ minutes later, Collins Sikombe unleashed a powerful long-range curling ball that beat Benson Sakala to put the hosts in the lead. This was Sikombe’s first goal for ZESCO United and the last goal of the match.

Yesterday’s victory saw ZESCO United reduce the lead at the top of the chart to five points following Red Arrows 1-all draw at home to Zanaco.

Mumamba’s reaction: “It was a good victory against a determined Buildcon. We started very slow in the first 30′ minutes because we gave them too much space and they dominated play in the middle of the park. We picked up towards the end of the half and managed to score our goals which is a very good thing for us.

The ZESCO United gaffer has urged his side to keep putting pressure on Red Arrows as the league draws to a close.

“It is very important that we keep winning. The draw in Lusaka is extra motivation for us as it reduces the gap at the top of the table from 7 to 5. We have shown that we can defend the championship but what matters is to keep winning.

We also need to be more clinical on target. Today we created many chances but failed to put them away. This is what we have been struggling with from the start of the season. We need to be more clinical.”

Mumamba congratulated Sikombe for scoring his first goal for the club: “Today I challenged him to get us the goals we saw at Lusaka Dynamos. I am very happy he has scored because he is a good player who gets in very good positions.”
