DYNAMOS CROWNED 2021 ABSA CUP CHAMPIONS

Lusaka Dynamos have been crowned 2021 Absa Cup champions after beating defending champions ZESCO United 3-1 on penalties.

The final which was staged at Lusaka’s MTN Woodlands stadium failed to produce a winner at the end of full 90 minutes.

Fackson Kapumbu, Tafadzwa Rusike and Bruce Musakanya failed to convert their spot kicks despite Ian Otieno saving twice to breath some life in the former champions.

Lusaka Dynamos goalkeeper,Ndala Monga beat Otieno to score the last spot kick of the game which insulated Lusaka Dynamos as 2021 Absa Cup champions.

ZESCO United coach Numba Mumamba has expressed disappointment with the teams failure to defend the Absa cup title.

“We are very disappointed especially that we haven’t lifted the trophy. It is disappointing that we couldn’t score from the chances that we created. Our opponents were defensive and parked the bus. Despite that being the case, we had created some chances unfortunately we couldn’t score.,” Mumamba said.

The ZESCO United gaffer bemoaned the team’s failure to utilize the few chances that they created in the game.

“We were in a hurry in the final third of the pitch. We created chances but we were not clinical.”

Mumamba defended his decision to start with Mwila Phiri in the middle of the park.

“We are trying to convert Mwila into a more defensive position because that’s where he is doing well in training. Today he didn’t play according to our expectations that’s why we rested him. But we will continue working on him because he has stayed for some time without playing.”

Meanwhile Mumamba has urged his players to quickly shift focus back to the league where the former league champions have opened a seven-point gap at the top.

“For us what has happened has happened. We need to focus on the next games in the league. We will work on the mental aspect of the game so that we restart the league on a positive note.”
